History of the Khmer Christian Counselor Association (KCCA Cambodia)

Our Beginning: A Vision for Unity and Growth

The Khmer Christian Counselor Association (KCCA) was born from a shared desire among Cambodian Christian counselors to unite the counseling community, strengthen professional identity, and create a space where Christian counselors could grow together spiritually, personally, and professionally. For many years, Christian counselors in Cambodia served faithfully within their own organizations, often without a national platform for collaboration or mutual support. This longing for connection and shared purpose became the foundation for the vision of KCCA.

Biblical Foundations of Our Calling

From the very beginning of KCCA’s journey, Scripture has been the unifying thread that draws Christian counselors together. Long before the association had a name, a structure, or a formal gathering, there was a shared sense of calling rooted in the Word of God. The early core team recognized that counseling is not merely a profession. It is a ministry of compassion, restoration, and healing that reflects the heart of Christ.

Throughout our formation, the Scriptures continually reminded us why this work matters and why unity among Christian counselors in Cambodia is essential. We heard the same calling echoed through God’s Word:

  • 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 “…God comforts us so we can comfort others…”
This passage became a foundational reminder that the comfort we receive from God equips us to comfort those who are hurting. It affirmed our shared mission: to be vessels of God’s compassion in a nation with deep wounds and ongoing needs for emotional and spiritual healing.
  • Isaiah 61:1–4 “…bind up the brokenhearted… that the broken may become oaks of righteousness… who will rebuild, restore, and renew.”
These verses resonated deeply with the team, especially in the Cambodian context. They reminded us that God not only heals individuals but also raises them up to rebuild families, communities, and future generations. This vision of restoration mirrors the long-term hope we carry for Cambodia.

These Scriptures and many others affirm that caring for others, both within and beyond the body of Christ, is not optional. It is a core imperative of the Christian faith. The call to comfort, restore, and walk alongside the brokenhearted is woven throughout the Bible and has shaped the identity and purpose of KCCA from the very beginning.

As the association grew, these biblical foundations continued to guide our decisions, strengthen our unity, and inspire our commitment to serve with humility, integrity, and love. They remain central to who we are today: a community of Christian counselors united by God’s Word and called to participate in His healing work in Cambodia.

2019: The Spark of a Movement

The journey formally began in 2019, when a group of 12 Cambodian counselors attended the 3rd Conference of the Asia Christian Counselor Association (ACCA) in Bali, Indonesia. “As first-time participants from Cambodia, they joined ACCA as individual counselors.”
During the conference, they were encouraged to consider forming a national association that could represent Christian counselors in Cambodia and strengthen their collective voice.

Phil-Cam Partnership and Early Formation

Following the conference, ACCA invited the Philippine Association to mentor and journey alongside the Cambodian group. This led to the creation of the Phil-Cam Meetings, monthly gatherings that became a space for fellowship, encouragement, prayer, and exploration of shared vision and mission. “Provided a space for fellowship, encouragement, prayer, and exploration of shared vision and mission.”
Cambodian representatives also joined ACCA’s monthly prayer meetings via Zoom, deepening regional relationships and spiritual support.

The First Core Team

The initial core group consisted of four members: Nimith, Lina, Leakena, and Chenda.
On November 21, 2020, a broader gathering of Khmer Christian counselors was organized to strengthen connections, share resources, and discern next steps. During this season, the team received faithful guidance from consultants Jenny Oh and Shirley Sinclair, who supported the group with wisdom, encouragement, and prayer.

Regular meetings were held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM, establishing a rhythm of consistency and commitment.

Perseverance Through Challenges

The journey was not without challenges. At times, the future felt uncertain, and the team wrestled with questions about sustainability, leadership, and direction. Yet the group continued to persevere, trusting that God was shaping something meaningful for Cambodia. Over time, the team expanded, even as one member stepped away to pursue studies abroad.

Eventually, the core team grew to five members:
Nimith, Lina, Leakena, Malis, and Dalis.
Together, they committed to building a strong foundation and officially named the association the Khmer Christian Counselor Association (KCCA Cambodia).

2023: Official Registration

With the ongoing support of the advisory team including Shirley Sinclair, Jenny Oh, and Mary Haag, missionaries who have spent many years serving in Cambodia and bringing extensive experience in the counseling field. KCCA was officially registered in 2023 under the Evangelical Fellowship of Cambodia. Their long-term commitment, mentorship, and deep understanding of the Cambodian context played a significant role in guiding the association toward stability and formal recognition.

This milestone marked the official acknowledgment of KCCA as a national body and affirmed years of prayer, perseverance, and collaboration among counselors who shared the same vision for unity and growth.

A Community Rooted in Support and Shared Purpose

Today, KCCA stands as a growing community of Christian counselors committed to professional excellence, spiritual formation, and collaborative service. “We are blessed to have wonderful people with kind hearts who have supported us along the way.”
Our prayer is that KCCA will continue to be a place where counselors can share resources, connect deeply, support one another, and grow together in the journey of healing.
